The Right Way to Shop for Outdoor Xmas Lights

Outdoor Xmas lights are manufactured in different sizes, shapes and lengths and it’s important to know what kind you need before you purchase them; think about why, where or how many you will use.  If you are going to use it for your Xmas tree or fence, make measurements to find out how long the string lights should be.

You may need to have the length customized or buy several packages if you will need really long ones for your fence or a big tree.  It’s always safe to buy an extra carton or give an allowance of 30 extra feet.  It’s better to have more than less.

Most outdoor Xmas lights are also safe for indoor use.  But never make the mistake of using indoor light strings for the outdoors as this could cause electrical problems or short circuiting.  Another thing to consider is the bulbs.  Some string lights use small bulbs while others are equipped with larger bulbs.

Small bulbs are good as accent pieces for buffet tables, indoor Xmas trees and other small accent decor inside the home.  Larger bulbs provide more light and are pretty useful for overhead lighting for parties, weddings, gardens and other large areas that need more light.

Outdoor Xmas lights usually have bigger bulbs because more light is needed to make them noticeable outdoors.  These lights are usually too harsh and bright for indoor use.  They are usually called C7 or C9 string lights and have 125 to 175 watt bulbs.

Some people buy them in shorter lengths because if one bulb burns out the whole string of lights won’t work.  It is also easier to replace short string lights that malfunction than buying the whole 50 foot long ones all over again.  String lights can be plugged together to form longer lengths anyway.

If you need to cover a large area with outdoor Xmas lights, it might be more affordable to buy them before festivals or holidays when there are still a lot of lights in stock.  Sometimes prices also go down right after Xmas season.  It’s also a good idea to check the bulbs of your string lights before the Xmas season to make sure that they are still working.

Many people find out that they are broken when it’s time to install them already.  With the Xmas rush at its height you may have a hard time looking for the right string lights.  Another practical option is to get them online without going through crowds of Xmas shoppers at the department stores.
